Bad VAWT design, poor siting sinks Quiet Revolution at RWE.

The Helical Twist Vawt  design of Quiet Revolution borrowed from Gorlov’s effective “in tube/pipe” water turbine proves not to work to advertised wind tunnel generated performance specifications ( also a tube of controlled flow). Go figure.

The Gorlov helical twist 3 blade VAWT design of Quiet Revolution suffers from poor startup and poor performance in semi turbulent wind and requires an expensive mechanical brake to control top rotational speed to avoid overspeed a genset burnout. Coupled with poor siting advice to get the sale it’s no small wonder the RWE project in Germany failed. The is no chance with this design to ever compete on LCOE terms with current market leaders as serious small wind turbine so it is really a functional art statement “oh look we are doing green energy” dreamed up by marketing wonks.

The question really is did RWE do this deliberately to maintain status quo, as both Ropatec of Italy and Future Tec of Austria Vawts prove to work just if sited properly as advertised and RWE could have easily visited their reference sites to validate field performance.

One can only wonder given all the smart engineers at RWE.

The lesson learned here is wind tunnel testing is only good for hi wind stress testing of wind turbines to determine the turbine structural codependent design parameters needed for material strength, and design telemetry and geometry. Wind Tunnel testing otherwise is not accurate for determining performance of small wind turbines.

Otherwise,  real portable field testing of small wind turbines at low mount heights in semi turbulent wind site settings like we did with Starwind5 is the only way to achieve a new VAWT design with a bankable LCOE “Levelized Cost of Energy”.


Tesla’s Big Subsidized Promise

For EVs where batteries are used 2 hours per day of daily consumer auto use this Tesla 70% price drop prediction or promise would be good.

However It is unlikely Tesla using current Panasonic and soon Samsung  tech and old legacy solvent based processes will compete in large MW Scale market soon where 10 hours per day is typical. The current Tesla designed battery cycle life is too small at 5000 cycles  to compete. 

If Tesla wishes to enter the MW space, Tesla will need to build a different factory using different battery cell tech suppliers with double tge cycle life.

For these 10 hour per day, 15 year life and 10000 cycle life MW battery applications look to emerging player Electrovaya to be the new MW battery market leader. Electrovaya is the new platinum standard with 400 patents, environmentally safe (no dangerous solvents) and  50% lower cost processes  (no expensive to buy and operate solvent dryer ovens).

The reality is the Nevada and US Tax payer is Subsidizing Tesla via huge tax breaks to produce old tech batteries in pretty packaging at scale in return for jobs and taking on alot of banking debt to  so, in order to fill Tesla pending orders for their EVs.

Or how Big Wind sells Ontario power to New York at a money losing discount in favor of Big commercial interests and the banks. What is wrong with this picture? 

Mega projects without storage. Bad. Trashing obvious enironment and local concerns out of hand. Bad.

Follow the money for root cause.

There are many simple, lower cost,  small distributed ways to deliver generation and storage of power with both wind and solar and new low cost, safe and cleanly manufactured energy storage from Ontario Companies like Electrovaya.

The only hurdles are poltical. 

Today, It’s a titanic struggle between central and local govts where the locals cant ever win unless they band together to sue the central governments with the local sheriffs and the courts backing them up with sane decisions which are optimizing use of tax payer money in favor of tax payers.

The Ontario Government Bolshevikism needs to be put to rest in the next election.

Wake up Ontario voters.

Wind turbine fails, or, why they earn the title slice-and-dicers –

As we lumber along in Wind 2.o land, we sometimes need to be reminded with pictures, how bad it can get when things do go wrong. 

Also note the tip generating vortexes in this pic, which is the real flaw in all the Hawt designs, requiring 18 to 22 spinning diameters spacing laid horizontally between these giants so as to get the wind to settle down and straighten, straight wind isessential for optimal performance and minimal vibration, the latter being the reason for the highest failure which is broken transmissions.That said the wide spacing increases capex cable costs and power transmission losses   versus  Vawts, the latter design is now being considered as mandatory for giant offshore designs over Hawts and driven by Sandia Research in order to get to best LCoE.

Magnet use in Graphite Li-Ion Battery Production Increases Cathode Power Density by 3X

My Response: Better lithium ion batteries, how do they work? Magnets! –

Add a little bit of iron in the graphite and magnets used in production can orient tge graphite flakes to improve percolatiom flow in graphite cathodes for 3X more power output from same cell, that is less ohms resistance for higher Amperage and more Volts possible from the same cell size.

What this magnetic production  method means for graphite based cathode batteries is more and faster electricity delivery to serve solutions needing short power delivery responses and fast charging.

EVs as well as automated and robotic systems stand to benefit immediately.
